Friends of New Garden Road is a group of neighborhood residents opposed to the rezoning of 4.69 acres at 1807 and 1809 New Garden Road between Timberoak/Strathmore and Jefferson/Will Doskey to commercial to allow the construction of an "Event Center for weddings and similar parties."
We think this is a really bad idea, and we are encouraging residents of our neighborhood who agree with us to speak out and let our elected officials know that we value the quality of our community and insist on maintaining it.
UPDATE
We have succeeded in round 2!! Though the Zoning Commission voted to approve the rezoning 5-3, it had to be referred to the City Council for final determination. Thanks to the efforts of many in the neighborhood, the developer has decided to withdraw the rezoning request. With your help, we were able to convince a majority of the city council that there was a strong neighborhood objection to the plan (230 residents from 143 homes at last count).
This is not necessarily the end. It is possible that the developer will apply for a Special Use Permit for the same event center project. While this will not set the zoning precedent that a commercial rezoning would, all of our other objections to an event center will remain the same (see the Zoning Commission Staff Report). We need to remain vigilant, as this could happen quickly.
