Friends of New Garden Road is a group of neighborhood residents opposed to the rezoning of 4.69 acres at 1807 and 1809 New Garden Road between Timberoak/Strathmore and Jefferson/Will Doskey to commercial to allow the construction of an "Event Center for weddings and similar parties."
We thought this was a really bad idea, and we encouraged residents of our neighborhood who agree with us to speak out and let our elected officials know that we value the quality of our community and insist on maintaining it.
UPDATE
Thanks to the vocal opposition to the original proposal, the property owner withdrew her application to rezone for an events center. She has now applied for a different rezoning:
...from RS-12 (Residential-Single Family) to CD-RM-5 (Conditional District-Residential Multi Family) with the following conditions:
This application is on the agenda for the January 12, 2009 meeting of the zoning commission.
last month, the owner contacted a number of the residents to describe her plan (in lieu of the event center) and solicit comments. We feel that this development plan is in keeping with the residential nature of the neighborhood. While we certainly would prefer that the property remain open space, we recognize the rights of property owners to develop their land.
We do not plan to raise objections to the proposal.
We will continue to watch for other developments along New Garden Road, and strive to maintain the character of our neighborhood.
